The following websites come highly recommended...

www.ccel.org   You could spend well over £300 obtaining a 38 volume set of books - the "Ante-Nicene Fathers" (ANF) and the "Nicene & Post-Nicene Fathers" (NPNF) collection - containing many of the classic writings of the Early Church period... or you could just view, search, download and print them off from this online resource. Fantastic! There are some minor errors and typos, as these works are scanned in and then gradually being proof-read, but you can't complain when it's free. A CD is also available, the proceeds from which help to fund the continuing work.

www.tertullian.org/fathers/   An excellent collection of additional works not found in the CCEL library (above). These works are all out of copyright but were only discovered and/or published after the ANF and NPNF series were finished (at the end of the 19th century!)

Some gems include:

  • Irenaeus - "Proof of the Apostolic Preaching"
  • Philocalia (of Origen) - a compilation of extracts made by St Gregory of Nazianzus and St Basil
  • Eusebius (the Church historian) - "Demonstratio Evangelica" & "Praeparatio Evangelica"
  • Gregory of Nyssa - "Life of St Macrina"
  • Gregory of Nazianzus - Orations 4 & 5 - Two inectives against the Emperor Julian ("The Apostate")
Some of these works are currently in print, but for those that are not it takes extreme patience to track down secondhand volumes. But with the collection & publication of these texts online, there's no need!

www.EarlyChurch.org.uk   No relation! This is an excellent online resource for further study of the Early Church period. Lots of suggestions for further reading and useful links to both paper and online articles. Highly recommended!

www.Monachos.net   A view of the Early Church period from the perspective of the Orthodox Church. Or, to be more precise, "Orthodoxy through Patristic, Monastic & Liturgical Studies". Has a very welcoming "Discussion Community" with conversations on many topics.

www.AidanHartIcons.com   Aidan Hart is a highly respected artist, producing not just traditional icons, but also (unusually) working with wood, metal, stone and a variety of other materials. His website has a display of some samples of his work, which often seem to be "traditional" yet with a very contemporary feel. Aidan accepts commissions and created two stunning icons of Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa for me in January 2005. Click here to take a look.
